Can I install both Management Studio and Management Studio Express on same machine?

I want to install the following on my machine:

MSDE 2000 Release A

SQL Server 2000 SP4

SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition with SP1

SQL Server 2000 Express with SP1

Management Studio

Management Studio Express

The only one that I'm concerning is whether Management Studio and Management Studio Express can coexist in one machine.

Thanks for any help,

Peter

NO. Products have been mutually exclusive since early betas.sql

Can I disable all exporting formats but Excel worksheets?

Hi, there

Some of the reports I am generating have tens of columns so the management decides to use Excel files only.

Is there any way that for a single report (not the whole project) I can disable printing and most of the exporting options (including PDF, HTML, TXT ...) and only leave the xls files available?

Thanks a lot.

Can I connect to remote SQL 2005 server through SQL Server Management Studio Express?

Can I connect to remote SQL 2005 server through SQL Server Management Studio Express?

I always get a error code 18456 when I try to connect to SQL 2005 server through SQL Server Management Studio Express. I'm sure I enter correct username and password!

The answer is yes its possible but it depends on the security configuration of the remote server.

Hope it helps,

Joe

|||oh wait. I don't have the Express version so I'm not sure if it is limited to local connections, it might be.|||

Can I backup database using SQL server 2005 express to CD or DVD

Hi,

I tried to backup a database in MSSQL 2005 using Management studio express edition directly to CD. The CD is formated with Sonic DLA. I'am getting this error message:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express

Backup failed for Server 'adilpc\sqlexpress'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.2047.00&EvtSrc=Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Smo.ExceptionTemplates.FailedOperationExceptionText&EvtID=Backup+Server&LinkId=20476

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.2047.00&LinkId=20476

Is it possible to backup directly to a CD or am I missing something? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Tnx

Adil

Hello

It's impossible to backup with SQL DServer 2005 Express directly to CD.

You can backup only to a file on a tape drive or a hard disk ( local or over a network connection ).

Afterwards, you have to copy this file to a CD

Sorry but SQL Server 2005 Express is free

It' possible with the standard, workgroup,Enterprise editions

Have a nice day

Can I access MSDE on a remote machine with Enterprise Manager?

We just installed an application, WhatsUpGold, to monitor our servers. Management won't let me host that on my primary SQL box. So, we are using MSDE on the local machine (call that box my_netmon).

I can access the db with very basic functionality using osql while on the my_netmon machine. I've added my domain user account as a System Admin using the following commands.

exec sp_grantlogin @.name
go

exec sp_addsrvrolemember @.name, 'sysadmin'

But when I go to the my_sql machine and try to attach to it with Enterprise Manager I get an error that the server does not exist.

What gives? Is it just not possible, or am I missing something here?

My goal is to just be able to see the data stored in the MSDE db. Write views, etc...

Please advise,

MarcHas anybody accessed MSDE from a remote machine. Or can it only be access locally with ODBC type connections?|||yes, you can use MSDE remotely. what does your connection string look like? is it a named instance?

for that matter, why bother with MSDE? it's ancient. you should use SQL Server Express if this is for new development.

Can create login but cannot connect (sa doesn't even work also)

Hi,

Please direct me to the right forum if this is not the right one.

Upon installation of SQL Server 2005, I opened the SQL Server Management Studio, connected using Windows Authentication and went to the security node in the tree. I created a log in called "TestLogin". I restarted my server just to make sure everything took and when I tried to log in using TestLogin via SQL Server Authentication, I get the below error. I have mixed mode enabled as well as named pipes. I am not sure what the issue is or what to try next. I even get the same error when trying to use "sa".

can calculation be defined in SQL Server Management Studio?

hi!can somenboby hlep me,i want to know that can calculations be defined in SQL Server Management Studio? And how to do it?Thank you very much!

Calculations are added to a new or existing cube using "Business Intelligence Development Studion" (BIDS). You could generate the script for a cube and then add the calculation by hand, but it is much easier to do using BIDS. If you simply want to create and test a calculation using SQL Server Management Studio you can add a query scoped member using a WITH clause in the MDX editor. Here is a simple example that can be run against Adventure Works:

WITH MEMBER Measures.[Internet Sales x 2]

AS

[Measures].[Internet Sales Amount] * 2

SELECT

{[Measures].[Internet Sales Amount],

[Measures].[Internet Sales x 2] } ON COLUMNS

FROM

[Adventure Works]

HTH,

Steve

|||thank you ,steve.this is a usefulness way.if i just want to creat calculation using SQL Server Management Studio ,like create calculation using BIDS that the calculation can show in measures, does it achieve?|||

If I understand your question correctly the answer is no. The WITH MEMBER calculation is only good for the life of the query. If you want to add a measure to a cube that can be used by others accessing the cube then I would use BIDS.

Steve

|||except using BIDS,does it exist another way to resolve the problem, for example, some script?|||

If your only alternative is SQL Server Management Studio, you can add a calculated member by running an ALTER cube script. In SSMS connect to the AS server where your cube is located. Expand the database and cube folders until you find the cube you want to add a calculated member to. Right click on the cube and then choose:

Script Cube as -> ALTER to -> New Query Editor Window

Then do a search on the script for MdxScripts. You should now see the calculation script for the cube. Edit the script to add in your CREATE MEMBER statement and then run the script. As long as your MDX is error free, you should now be able to see your new calculated member when you access the cube.

HTH,

Steve

Can AS-Actions be used in RS 2005?

Hello,
we defined a drillthrough action in AS to display some detail-information:
If we browse a cube inside Management Studio and do a right click on a
corresponding value, the defined action shows up in the context menu, so we
can display a list with the details. Now we want to have the same thing
inside reporting services: Just click on a value and show the corresponding
details. Is it possible to use the "resultset" of the AS-Action inside a
report? Where can we find detailed information on how to do that?
Regards,
R. Watermannshort answer: no
in RS you have to create your own navigation which is independent from the
cube definition.
RS is a reporting tool not a data navigation tool (like OWC proclarity
etc...).
maybe using some code you can retrieve these actions, but by default RS
can't do this.

can a non-administrator user run the SQL Server Management Studio Express ?

If i install the SQL Server Express and the Management Studio in my computer with an administrator account... can a non-administrator user run the SQL Server Management Studio Express ?

When the non-administrator user tries run the SSEMS, he gets an error, something like "Cannot load the SQL Management Studio Package".

Can i set several permissions to let non-administrator users run the SSEMS ?

Hi Jamie,

Any user can run Managment Studio Express, but you need permissions to use SQL Express. By default, only members of the Administrators group have permissions to do any tasks in SQL Express. For non-administrative users, you will need to explicitely create Logins and Users in SQL Server for those users. You can only create Logins and Users when you are an SA, so you'll need to log in as an adminstrator and setup the appropriate permissions.

I'd recommend you read the Books Online topics related to security.

Can "Date Modified" col be automatically updated w/o trigger for each table?

Hello,

I am using SQL Server 2005 and ASP.NET 2.0. We have a very simple content management system where we have to keep track of date last modified for each row in all of our content tables. I know there's a "timestamp" datatype that is used for replication scenarios, but is there anything similar that I can use to set up a date_modified column for each of my content tables that will automatically update with GETDATE() whenever anything in a given row is updated?

Or do I have to create a date_modified column of smalldatetime datatype and write a trigger on update for EVERY single table of content that I have in the database? It seems there should be an easier way to do this than to write 20 triggers for my 20 content tables.

Thanks!

Using triggers is the only way I can think out for this issue, as you want to record every modification to each table:)

Calling user-defined functions in OLE DB Command transformation

Hi

We have a user-defined function that can be called directly via SQL (in SQL Server Management Studio) without error. We would like to use this function to populate a column, whist data is being processed within Integration Services. Using an OLE DB Command transformation to achieve this would seem the most appropriate.

The following was inserted for the SQLCommand property:

EXEC ? = dbo.GetOrderlineStatus(@.dt_required = ?, @.dt_invoice = ?, @.dt_despatch = ?, @.ch_status = ?, @.si_suffix = ?, @.re_quantity = ?, @.vc_invoice_id = ?, @.vc_order_id = ?)

However, when the Refresh button is pressed we are presented with the error below:

Error at Load Orderline [OLE DB Command [15171]]: An OLE DB error has occurred. Error code: 0x8004E14. An OLE DB record is available. Source: "Microsoft SQL Native Client" Hresult: 0x8004E14 Description: "Invalid parameter number".

If we use SET instead of EXEC (e.g. SET ? = dbo.GetOrderlineStatus(@.dt_required = ?, @.dt_invoice = ?, @.dt_despatch = ?, @.ch_status = ?, @.si_suffix = ?, @.re_quantity = ?, @.vc_invoice_id = ?, @.vc_order_id = ?)) the following error is produced:

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You cannot use SET or EXEC with a UDF. You need to use

SELECT @.ReturnVar = [dbo].fnYourFunctionName ( @.InputVar )

Even though you are in the wrong forum, I think the first parameter in red could be your problem. Check the assignment in the Input / Output properties of the Ole DB Command component. The names of the Inputs and Outputs must be specific "Param_0", "Param_1", etc.. Check SSIS help on the subject.

Correct, this is an Integration Services question - I posted to the wrong forum, apologies for that.

The Input and Output Properties tab does not yet display any Inputs or Outputs, as the error prevents the creation of the parameters. As soon as the statement is entered into the SqlCommand box and the Refresh button pressed, the error is produced with no parameters created, hence preventing further progress.
