Can I Install Enterprise edition on Windows 2000 Server as in Small Business Ser

Hi.
We have Windows 2000 Small Business Server
In control panel/System the operating system is identified
as
Windows 2000 server service pack 4
Microsoft pages on System requirements for SQL Server
Enterprise edition says requires Windows 2000 Server
The operating system I have seems to be Windows 2000
Server even though it has some junk in it making it
Windows 2000 Small Business Server.
Question can i Install SQL Server 2000 Enterprise?
I need this because i need to use Indexed Views which do
not exist in Sql Server standard edition.
THe answer varies depending on whome i ask at Microsoft.
Apreciate any advice.Hi
There is no mention of SBS on the system requirements at
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/evaluation/sysreqs/2000/default.asp
even though SQL Server comes with it!!
I have never tried installing this onto a specific SBS system, so can not be
100% but I am pretty sure that it is no different. If you do help/about
windows in Windows Explorer and it says Microsoft (R) Windows Version 5.0
then I don't think there would be any reason for it not to.

Can I install a Enterprise version analysis service on a Standard version of SQL 2005 server?

Hi all,

Since some analysis services features are only available in Enterprise version , I have to upgrade my SQL 2005 server from standard edition to enterpise edition.

So I uninstall originial standard version of analysis service and install a Enterprise version. However, the analysis service is still a standard version after installation.

Is it possible to keep data engine as standard version and install a enterprise version of analysis service?

Thank you very much

Tony

Yes. This is supported as in SQL Server 2005, Standardard SKU and Enterprise SKU can be installed side by side successfully. Of course, their instancenames must be distinct.

Can I host the web service in SQL Express?

In WCF, web services can be hosted in many processes other than IIS. Can I
write my CLR extension (web service) to the SQL Express? SQL Server
Enterprise edition supports native web service, but it requires IIS.
Thanks.
HaoHello Hao,

> Can I
> write my CLR extension (web service) to the SQL Express?
If you mean, "can I write an CLR-based function or procedure and host that
in an instance of SQL Express?" then the answer is yes.
If you mean, "can I create an HTTP endpoint in an SQL Express instance?"
then the answer is no. You'll get error 7878 for your efforts.

Um, no, that's the point of HTTP endpoints.
Thanks!

services.
1. Customers have to buy full SQL.
2. IIS is required.
Please correct me if the above two requirements are wrong.
Therefore it seems that the only work around is to write my own windows
service in WCF to expose web services and have this windows service talk to
SQL Express. Am I on the right track?
Thanks.

Define full SQL. HTTP endpoints are availble in the fairly cheap workgroup
SKU and higher.

HTTP Endpoints DO NOT require IIS on XP, Server 2003 or higher.

If you want to use SQLExpress then the basic answer is yes.
Alternatively, you could use Mono to develop an ASMX service and deploy what
ever
HTTP stack you like.

Can I have a simple technical example of how to start?

I find difficulty in getting started with the service broker, and didnwt find a simple example.

I understand service broker is used for usynchronous jobs.

For example- I want to have a service that will perform SQL commands.

What are the necesary commands to create the queue,

to add the comand "Update MyTable Set MyField=1" to it,

and to get the command and perform it in another sesion?

Hi Geri!

Enclosed you'll find a complete T-SQL script that shows you how you can use Service Broker for asynchronous jobs. When you look through the script, you'll encounter the stored procedure "ProcessRequestMessages". This is the place where you can put your needed T-SQL code into.

If you have further questions just ask.

Can I get an English version of electron book

I used Chinese edition of Windows.
When I download Reporting service trial version.
I always get a Chinese version thought I have choosen an English version.
The translation of electron book is not good, so I want to read in English.
How can I get a English version of electron book of Reporting Service?When you install reporting services, we include all languages in a single
distribution. We derive the language for the install from the OS language
settings. You can change this by setting the language for non-Unicode
programs to English. To get the english version:
Start
-->Control Panel
-->Regional and Language Options
-->Advanced tab
--> Language for non-Unicode programs - set this to English (United States)
Also, if you can provide examples of where the translation is poor, we would
love to know these so we can make the localization for our documentation
better.

But the character of Outlook is mess up after set the Control Pannel's
language to English.
Are there any method just change the electron book's language to English,
not the whole Windows system.

Can I Created a BPA 'Job'

Can I created a job that I can send to my Service Delivery group to run on the Production servers? I'm a developer and don't WANT access to PROD, but I want BPA run against PROD. I'd like to have them install BPA and them send them a 'package' to run. Is
this available with BPA?
Thanks,
Maybe not exactly what you want, but there's a way you can get close.
Install BPA, which creates the repository. In it, create a best practice
group that scans things the way you want. You should register the servers
from production, or register them as (local).
Have your production team install BPA (they will have to create a repository
but it can be discarded) and then ask them to run bpa (likely the command
line version bpacmd.exe) pointing at your repository database. If they do
that, they'll have to execute the best practice group that you created.

Can I Clear SQL Event Log

Hi,
Is there a way to clear the SQL Server Event Log without
stopping/starting the SQL service? I am running SQL Server 2000. I am
not talking about the transaction logs.
Thank You.
DanHi Dan
I assume you are talking about the SQL Server error log. You cannot clear
the log, but you can start a new one, by using the procedure
sp_cycle_errorlog.

Can I call a web service from SQL?

I have two databases with two identical tables in seperate physical locations. I want database B tables to be updated automatically when database A tables change. Is there a way to call a web service from SQL to make this happen? Or is there a better way to do this? I would really like it to get the rows that were modified and then copy only those rows to the other database tables. If anyone knows if this can be done please let me know. Thank you.

Why do you need a webservice? Maybe it's better to archieve this using UPDATE Triggers? Although the performance of firing triggers is not so good in some case, but it should be easier and faster than calling webservice. So let's say you want to trace modification made in database1.dbo.Table1, and you want to copy the modified rows into database2.dbo.Table2, and the 2 tables have almost the same structure, except the Table2 has 1 more column used to record UPDATETIME. You can create an UPDATE/INSERT trigger on Table1 like this:

CREATE TRIGGER trg_TraceMod ON tempdb.dbo.tbl_Const1 FOR UPDATE
AS
IF(object_id('tempdb.dbo.tbl_Trace') IS NULL)
BEGIN
SELECT deleted.*,GETDATE() AS UpdTime INTO tempdb.dbo.tbl_Trace FROM deleted

END
ELSE
INSERT INTO tempdb.dbo.tbl_Trace
SELECT deleted.*,GETDATE() FROM deleted
go

To learn more about triggers, you can refer to:

Enforcing Business Rules with Triggers

|||Thank you very much for the reply. The reason I was think about a webservice is because the two databases are in two different physical locations and cannot access each other without a web service because they are not on the same network. Basically one database is in our office and the other one in downtown in a data center. The one in the data center needs to update the one in our office everytime it changes. Could I use triggers to do that?|||

Then you can tryLinked Servers. Connections between internet SQL Servers may be more complex than in the same network, there may be trouble in locating host SQL box, passing credentials, firewalls, and so on. You may take a look at this post if you fail to establish connections between the 2 SQL servers:

http://forums.asp.net/thread/1289341.aspx

And after the Linked Servers have been created (you can do this in Enterprise Manager->Security->Linked Servers), you can query the tables on the linked server using four part object name:

server.database.owner_name.object_name

Or you can useOPENQUERY.

|||

My question is somewhat related. I need to call a web service upon completion of a sql job. Is this possible? I'm using a product called Captaris Workflow. What I need to do is call a web service that creates a new workflow process and emails the person responsible for the first workflow task. The workflow part may sound foreign, nevertheless, I want to call a web service when a sql job completes. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason

Can DBLocks cause problems?

We have a monitoring service that reported an alert last night at 12:17. It
reports based on the counter used in Perf Mon. This alert was based on
Locks-- Lock Wait Time(MS). Anyways, 7 minutes later my 5 Web Servers which
are load balanced were unable to connect to the DB and reported an error. A
few minutes later the sites recovered and the lock issue was resolved. Im
not able to tell which of these two things occured first though. Also around
this time I got an error in the SQL Error Log:
Error: 17883, Severity: 1, State: 0
2005-08-09 00:21:06.02 server The Scheduler 3 appears to be hung. SPID 4,
ECID 0, UMS Context 0x04A13268.
I read up on this but it doesnt say that it has anything to do with locks.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=810885
Any way I can figure out if the two are related? Any way to figure out why I
had long wait times on locks?
TIA, ChrisRMy guess would be the symptoms were as the result of the error you posted.
I would go by the KB and seeif you can address the issues that caused that
error and resolve it.

Can connect to sql server from some machines but not others...

I have a server with a sqlexpress database on it.
It has 'Allow Remote Connections' checked

It has the Browser Service enabled and started utilizing Surface Area Configuration

It has Local and Remote Connections Using both TCP/IP and named Pipes.

I have used http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277

And one machine can connect to it fine.. .

but others can't?

Any Ideas?

Casey

Hi Casey,

We'll need the exact error message that you're seeing to be able to help you, as it can be a number of reasons.

|||

PS. I can ping the server from both computers (the one that can connect and the one that cannot)

TITLE: Connect to Server

Cannot connect to HOZZZZZZZ\SQLEXPRESS.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: -1)

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=-1&LinkId=20476

BUTTONS:

OK

|||

you have already said that

(a) Remote connection enabled

(b) Browser service running

(c) TCP/IP protocol selected

the only one thing left is check for any Firewall enabled on this server. If yes create exception

also makesure the service is running

Madhu

|||

Yes, we have checked that the service is running. (In SQL Server Configuration Manager when I click SQL Sever 2005 Services, both Sql Server and Sql Server Browser show state as 'Running' and Start Mode as 'Automatic)

Yes, there is no firewall runnning, so no need for exceptions.

(when I run firewall.cpl from command I get message box saying that the WIndows Firewall/ ICS service is not running.)

And this is why we can connect to this sql from some machines.. but not sure why we can't from others..

|||

Can you connect if you specify ip instead of machine name? (e.g. 127.0.0.1\SQLEXPRESS)

If two of these machines are on the same domain, they would be able to connect with <single part name>\instance, but a machine outside of the domain would need either ip\instance or <fully qualified dns name>\instance.

Hope we can figure this out.

John

|||

Actually, error 26 indicates that you've established the transport connection but cannot locate the named instance to which you want to connect. Is your client machine Vista by any chance?

Il-Sung.

|||

IP Name didn't work. (or fully qulalified name)

However we removed the \SQLEXPRESS and it seems to be working. (I double checked and the SqlServer configuration manager on the server does show that the it is running as a SQLEXPRESS Install.)

so Server = HOZZZZ\SQLEXPRESS - Doesn't work...

but Server = HOZZZZ - Does seem to work.. don't understand that one..

casey

|||

Well if the named one did not work, you either have a client alias configured on your server or you have a default non-Express instance on your server. Connect to the instance and use the SELECT @.@.version to find out more details about the version of SQL Server.

Jens K. Suessmeyer

http://www.sqlserver2005.de

|||

Again, are you using Vista?

|||

The connection string without sqlexpress appears to be working.

Windows XP

select@.@.version =

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - 9.00.1399.06 (Intel X86)Oct 14 2005 00:33:37Copyright (c) 1988-2005 Microsoft CorporationExpress Edition on Windows NT 5.2 (Build 3790: Service Pack 1)

Casey

|||

Then the only explanation for me is that you are using a alias on the client side which points to the .\SQLExpress instance.

Jens K. Suessmeyer

http://www.sqlserver2005.de

|||I think the more likely event is that you clicked "default instance" when you installed SQL Express.

This may sound a bit confusing but if you click nothing on the instance selection screen but the "Next" button, SQL Express installs as a named instance titled SQLExpress. If you click "default instance", it will install as a "default instance" which has a different meaning.

In the global context, a default instance is run as MSSQLSERVER. The connection string to connect to a default instance is "machinename" with no instance name at the tail. For any named instance (including SQL Express's default named instance) you have to append \instancename, so it looks like "machinename\instancename".

The reason this is all confusing is that by default, SQL Express installs as a named instance, but if you click "Default Instance" it installs as a default instance (which is not what the default behavior was to begin with).

In a global context, the "Default Instance" is a special, unnamed instance that is the default for other SKUs of the product. This doesn't track with the local definition of "default instance" which, of course, should be the default on the screen (SQLExpress).

I hope that made sense and helps to clarify what might have been going on here,

John

Can connect from Query Analyzer but not from Report Services

I can terminal service into the box running Reporting Services. If I try to
run the
report I can't connect, it says login failed. Using the same
username/password which is sa because it's a log shipped server. I can
connect through Query Analizer. The only rememdy is to restart both servers.
Then I can connect. Then it will go hey wire after a day or two and same
situation. What could be causing this?
Please help me,
BryanAlso if I try to do net stop reportserver it says the server is not
responding to the control function. Actually the same thing happens if I try
to shut down the secondary log shipped server that the reports are pointing
at. If I do net stop mssqlserver. It gives me the same error. Something is
going on here between the two and I can't figure out what it is that is going
on?

AS2K5 only supports OLEDB (in fact this is true with *all* versions of AS,
even back to the V7 days). What is new is that SQL2K5 on the relational side
has dropped support for the OLEDB Provider for ODBC. Thus AS has no way of
getting to a general ODBC data source.
If the only way of getting to your data is via ODBC then you will have to
read it from SSIS and then pump it into AS with the AS processing task that
is available to it -- or you could stage it in a data source with an OLEDB
provider being available.

can any one help in writing quries to sqlserver 2005 analysis service

I just want to calculate the measures using functions ie i want to calculate the YTD MTD and QTD . Can anyone help me out

Have you tried using the time intelligence wizard to do this? Depending on the service pack that you have it may not write the mose efficient MDX, but at least it should get you started.
