Can I hide system objects in QA like in EM

...using SQL SERVER 2k
I know how to hide system objects in Enterprise Manager, but can this same
sort of thing be done in Query Analyzer... like what I see done on the Server
tab of Visual Studio?

No, that functionality is not available in QA. All you have is the pre-defined folders for user
tables and system tables. No such for stored procedures, but I hope that you don't have user
procedures in master? :-)

No, of course not. And I am not referring to the master, model, etc database.
In Enterprise Manager, in user created databases there are a number of SPs,
tables and views that are hidden if you select to hide system objects.
Obviously SQL SERVER/EM is intelligent enough to recognize the difference,
but Query Analyzer doesn't seem to be able to. Even users restricted to a
single DB can see master in QA.
It leads to a lot of scrolling to get to that one SP.

finger is cramping from all this damn scrolling. I just have to increase the
number of lines the scroll button moves with the mouse setup.

I don't believe that is supported. You can do what you want using a tool
like VirtualPC from Microsoft or VMWare. That is, you can run a virtual
PC and install whatever you want and have the virtual session connect
with your main PC or other PCs on your network.

It is possible and usable, but due to the fact that SQL Server 6.5 is no
longer supported by Microsoft, and Service Packs and hotfixes for SQL Server
2000 you may apply might break it.

Yes, you install SQL 6.5 and SQL 2000 in same machine. As well as you can
execute ISQLW and Enterprise manager of both versions in parallel.
Note:
If you are installing SQL 2000 client in a machine with SQL 7 client, the
SQL 2000 setup program will overwrite your SQL 7 client tools.
But SQL 2000 client tools support all SQL 7 activities.

you could always right click on a table, show top whatever rows, and show the SQL Query, in there try typing the "exec procname" statement. That should work. But if i were you, I'd stick with Query Analyzer.|||For what purpose?

Can I copy a report in Report Manager?

I'm a newbie to reporting services.
Is it possible to copy a report to more than one folder in the Report
Manager? We have a staging area where all of our reports are being
deployed. They are then moved to specific folders for various clients.
Some clients will use the same report, so it will exist in more than
one location. Is there a way to copy the report in Report Manager to
the respective folders or do they need to be uploaded to each folder?

In a word, no! You can upload it multiple times to different places.
You can also create "linked" reports, these are basically shortcuts to
one report although I doubt this will work in your scenario because you
will be tied to the one set of datasources.
So I'm afraid you will have to upload or deploy and move, upload or
deploy and move etc.
I guess you could look at the ReportServer catalog file and decipher it
to work out how to copy but I wouldn't recommend it!

You can use the IP address instead of the server name. Just try 127.0.0.1 to
connect to your local server. If you think the ip addresses are confusing in
Enterprise Manager, you can use the Client Network Utility to set up an
alias that you can use instead.

Can I Alter A Report that has already been deployed to my Report Manager

I have some OLAP reports in which I have to alter the MDX statements each month, in the VS2005 report designer. They are deployed to the web and they contain Descriptions and Subscriptions which I create once they get to the web. The way I am currently updating them each month is by editing the reports in VS2005 and re-deploying them to the Reports Server. I then have to add the descriptions again and create new Subscriptions because the orig reports are deleted when the new ones, with the same name are deployed. There has to be a way that I can just alter the existing reports in the web environment and not have to recreate the Subscriptions each month. Any help would be appreciated.

If you go to the actual report that you want to update in report manager and go to the general tab there is a button that says update that you can select and then upload the new version. Then all of your descriptions and your history will remain and you just upload the new version of the report.

Properties-General-Update-Do not forget to hit apply when finished choosing rdl file.

Can I access MSDE on a remote machine with Enterprise Manager?

We just installed an application, WhatsUpGold, to monitor our servers. Management won't let me host that on my primary SQL box. So, we are using MSDE on the local machine (call that box my_netmon).

I can access the db with very basic functionality using osql while on the my_netmon machine. I've added my domain user account as a System Admin using the following commands.

exec sp_grantlogin @.name
go

exec sp_addsrvrolemember @.name, 'sysadmin'

But when I go to the my_sql machine and try to attach to it with Enterprise Manager I get an error that the server does not exist.

What gives? Is it just not possible, or am I missing something here?

My goal is to just be able to see the data stored in the MSDE db. Write views, etc...

authentication. It seems that neither the Developer nor the Evaluation
editions can work in this configuration, even though the descriptions for
these editions say that they're as capable as the Enterprise Edition (only
the licensing differs). The problem seems to be that the cookie generated by
the Report Server web service, when passed back from the browser, is being
rejected by the Report Manager. In a web farm, the domain name used to
access the Report Manager is different from that used by Report Manager to
access the Report Server web service. They can not be the same, and I think
because of this the cookie generated by Report Server is being rejected by
Report Manager.
I have tried SP1 and used the PassThroughCookie setting, but it still
doesn't work. Do I need to get the Enterprise Edition now when I am just in
development stage of this project?

documentation that you referred to below again, and determined that may be
my installation does not recognize that it is in a web farm. You see, in our
development environment, we are starting off with just one server, although
there is a load balancer that routes packets from the client to this one
server. So this RS server has its own NETBIOS machine name and IP address
separate and different from that of the load balancer. The client has no
access to the RS server NETBIOS machine name and IP address; it can only
access it through the load balancer. However, like I already said, we are
starting off with just one RS server.
The instructions for instalation in a web farm assume two or more servers,
and it seems that it is the presence of the second server that determines
the behavior of RS. In other words, if there is no second server, RS does
not behave like a web farm component. Is this true?
Also, how does RS deal with custom authentication in a web farm? Will RM
accept cookies generated by the Report Service web service on another domain
(ReportServerUrl should point to the same server in a web farm, which is
different for each server, and different from the main website URL). In
other words, has Microsoft tested RS in a web farm with custom
authentication?

Can connect to 'ServerName' but not to its IP address

I'm using SQL Manager from my Enterprise server to connect to my SQL Express server that will act as a witness to a db mirroring system. If I try to connect to the SQL Express server using its IP address, I get a "named pipes error 53." If I connect by browsing the network and connect to the Name of the Server "Machinename\SQLExpress", I am successful. I would like to be able to connect to the IP directly as it's not dependant upon certain services to be started or configured a certain way.

CAN CONNECT ONE WAY TO SQL SERVER BUT NOT BACK

There is a Remote SQL server 2000 server that can connect (register
thru query analyzer or enterprise manager) with 3 remote Sql server
2000 servers without issue. When these 3 servers try and connect back
(thru query analyzer or enterprise manager) I get the "SQL Server does
not exist or access denied" error message.
I have confirmed with my network guys that the request is making it to
the server so the failure point is at the server (Windows 2003). the
firewall is turned off so I know that is not the issue.
Any insight would be very helpful.

Can a Connection Manager be parameterized?

Can you create one connection manager that accepts the Server name and database name at run time and constantly reuses the server and datbase name at runtime when executing one SSIS solution with Multiple packages.

You can use Expressions property in your connection manager to build the connection string at run time. You might also want to use package configurations to 'pick up' the right values from a configuration file/table.
