Can I get a link to step-by-step MSDE install instrustions on WIN2

Hi All,
I new when it comes to MSDE but all I need to do is install it and setup an
ODBC data source for an application I run. It's on Windows 2003 Server and no
matter what I do I can't setup an ODBC connection using SQL authentication
because I get error 18456 all the time. I've granted my windows account login
access, the install is NOT set for windows authentication only, and TCP/IP is
enabled. I can login as sa from the command line but not through the ODBC
manager. I'm on about my 5th reinstall and have become very frustrated here.
Can some one point me in the right direction please?
Thanks
That error is a login failure, it surely doesn't help reinstalling. You need
permission to log into your SQL Server.
If you are member of the local administrators group, you shouldn't get this
error.
Other possibilities could be if you have semi-colon in your username (there
is a KB article on this).
Please use your full name when posting to these newsgroups.

Can backup to disk, but not to tape - Access Denied

I have been trying to use the Maintenance Wizard to setup a backup job to
tape however I continually get an Access Denied message for the failure.
Even when I try to insert a previously successful tape and try to see what
is on it I still get the Access denied message (Bad Password). I am able to
backup to a folder without any problem.
Both SQL server and Agent start with a Domain Admin account and I have
created these jobs while logging in with the accounts. I have even created
the databases with this account as well. No problem accessing the data,
just backing up to tape.

For what it's worth, most folks don't write SQL backups directly to
tape. Write your SQL backups to disk, and then let your tape backup
software backup those backup files to tape.

Can aspnetdb.mdf be moved from development to production machine?

1.) Can an aspnetdb.mdf database be configured and setup on one server and then be moved to a production server or is there something machine specific that keeps this from being possible?
2.) Is putting this file in the app_data folder something that is used only for SQL 2005 or SQL express? I had to set up a connection string in my SQL 2000 installation to get the connection to work.

Thanks for any input!

Colelaus

aspnetdb.mdf is the default sql express database created, if you want to move it onto production, your production server has to install sql express and reference it in your connection string|||

I'm using aspnetdb.mdf as my security database but not SQL Express due to llimitations on the server. I guess my question is really is there anything that is generated in the database when setting up security that is machine specific that would keep the database from being moved from one machine to another?

If it is machine specific, it would require as you referenced, me to recreate on the production server and reset all the users again.

Hi Colelaus,

If your production server provides SQL server other editions than the Express edition, you will need to have the .mdf database files attach to server manually, since other edtions of SQL server does not support attaching database files automatically at runtime.

Also, you will need to modify your connection string and make it look like "Data Source=ServerName\InstanceName;Initial Catelog=DatabaseName". It points to a database on server instead of a .mdf file.For other information, you will need to contact the hosting service.

The tool you may use : Aspnet_regsql.exe ( More details about the tool, pls visit http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms229862(VS.80).aspx )

Thanks.

Thanks. That is exactly the info I needed.

Can anyone tell me.

Let's assume I have to go for setup of sql server and I have a 20 GB
database and daily transaction is around 200 KB size. Can any one tell me
what I have to do for setup sql server like what are the configuration and
what are the step I have to consider.
Thanks
John
For the most parts, SQL Server is smart enough to figure out the appropriate
configuration during installation. However, there are things to consider
before you install (hardware requirements, disk layout, etc...) and things
to do after you're done (maintenance).
Suggest you check out http://www.microsoft.com/sql/ and review some of the
installation and management papers then come back here with specific
questions.

Calling user defined function from other server

I have UDF in a database on SQL2000 server. Is it possible to call this UDF from other server (SQL2005)? I did setup a linked server to SQL2000

Call to the following function returns an error:

Msg 207, Level 16, State 1, Line 1

Invalid column name 'srv2000'.

select [srv2000].db_test.dbo.F_TEST()

You cannot call remote UDFs in SQL Server right now. So you will have to use pass-through query using OPENQUERY to call the UDF or EXECUTE AT in SQL Server 2005.

-- SQL Server 2000/2005

select i from openquery([srv2000], 'select db_test.dbo.F_TEST() as i')

-- SQL Server 2005

exec('select db_test.dbo.F_TEST() as i') at [srv2000]

-- Or

declare @.i int
exec('select ? = db_test.dbo.F_TEST() ', @.i output) at [srv2000]
select @.i
